ABC/DAP Grant and PBL

Heath Springs Elementary School is named an Arts in Basic Curriculum (ABC) site by the South Carolina Arts Commission and has also received the Distinguished Arts Program (DAP) grant from the South Carolina Department of Education.

Through these grants, HSE has been fortunate to bring in teaching artists to work with every grade level.  Annually, school-led professional-level productions such as Little Red Riding Hood, Jingle Bell Jukebox, Snow White, Annie, The Ugly Duckling, Grumps of Ring-a-Ding Town, and It's A Jungle Out There have been performed. These productions have helped to strengthen the music, visual art, drama and dance departments within our school in all grades K-5 as we have a 3-5th grade production once a year and a K-2 production once a year.

It is our vision at HSE to use the arts as a vehicle for learning. Through the use of drama, creative movement/dance, visual art, media arts, and music (both instrumental and vocal), students are offered an arts-based approach through individualized and team-teaching models. Our teachers are fortunate to participate in professional development through Summer Teaching Institutes covered by these grants through the Peace Center for Performing Arts in Greenville, SC and the Spoletto Arts Festival in Charleston, SC as well as after school PD when we have artist come to the school.
